C. Alcantara & Sons Inc. (CASI) was cited for being the first in the Philippine plywood industry to get certified as a Smartwood "Chain of Custody" manufacturing company. The award was granted by Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an internationally recognized standard setting body that accredits and monitors forestry certifiers worldwide.

Under the chain of custody certificate issued to CASI, the buying public is assured that only certified wood products are processed and sold under a management system complying with the requirements of FSC standards. This system ensures that all certified materials are tracked down and marshaled throughout the entire process from log purchasing through plywood manufacturing, and finally, sales and delivery.

"We are happy to note that our strict environmental and socio-economic practices are in accordance with the principles & criteria of the FSC," declares CASI Vice President Priscilla Florentino.

The certification is anchored on the purpose of creating sustainable and well-managed forest resources. As such, it provides a guarantee to customers of timber products that what they buy comes from sustainably managed forest.

CASI received its certificate recently which took effect on November 15, 1999 with a life of five years. Assessment and certification was made by Smartwood (a program of Rainforest Alliance), the largest certifier worldwide based in USA.

There are 3 categories under which the certification is made:

1. Forest Based - for all forestry operations either public or privately owned,
2. Chain of Custody (COC) - for those involved in secondary forest operations like plywood, sawmill and other wood using industry, and
3. Rediscovered Wood - for those involved in using recycled wood as raw materials base (i.e. particleboard, hardboard, paper, etc.)

Annual audits are to be carried out by the certifier - Smartwood throughout the life of the certificate. This certification scheme which has gained global acceptance is expected to bring in social & economic benefits such as: preservation of remaining forests, safeguarding the environment, continuous supply of raw materials from sustainable, renewable well-managed forest and access to new markets.
